North-East Summer Research Fellowship (NE-SRF)

A JNCASR initiative inviting undergraduate and master's students from the seven sister states of Northeast India to actively engage in research in the natural sciences and engineering. Selected students undertake an 8-week research internship under the guidance of faculty mentors from institutions in the Northeast — either solely at the mentor's laboratory or in collaboration with JNCASR, Bengaluru.

Application Details

The North-East Summer Research Fellowship (NE-SRF) offers ambitious students from Northeast India a gateway into the world of scientific discovery — combining mentorship, innovation, and hands-on research experience.

Eligibility Criteria

Students currently enrolled in B.Sc., B.S., B.E. / B.Tech, B.S. M.S., Integrated M.Sc., M.Sc., or equivalent degree programmes from Northeast India are eligible.

  • Applicants must be domicile of one of the seven North-East states.
  • Currently enrolled in B.Sc., B.S., B.E. / B.Tech, B.S. M.S., Integrated M.Sc., M.Sc., or equivalent degree programmes.
  • Willingness to commit 8 weeks per year for research.

Fellowship Support

Selected fellows receive comprehensive financial support to facilitate their research journey.

  • ₹20,000 fellowship upon completion
  • ₹5,000 annual travel support
  • Up to ₹10,000 additional support for JNCASR collaboration
  • Accommodation support facilitated at the respective institute

Programme Structure & Selection

Selected students undertake an 8-week research internship (either in a single stretch or in two spells) under the guidance of faculty mentors from institutions in the Northeast.

Projects may be conducted:

  • Solely in the mentor's laboratory in the Northeast
  • In collaboration with JNCASR, Bengaluru

Faculty Mentor (from NE) will:

  • Provide mentorship for students for 8 weeks
  • Offer exposure to research in Physical, Chemical, Life, Mathematical, Geological or Engineering Sciences
  • Facilitate accommodation support in the respective institute

Selection: Up to 10 students selected based on merit, statement of purpose, and availability of mentors.

Physical Sciences

Condensed matter theory and experiment, statistical physics, semiconductor materials physics, biophysics, nano physics, organic electronics, soft matter, optics and photonics, quantum optics, integrated photonics, astrophysics, AI in physics.

Chemical Sciences

Solid state chemistry, theoretical and computational chemistry, organic, physical and inorganic chemistry, asymmetric synthesis, medicinal and bio-organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, nanomaterials chemistry, renewable energy materials.

Engineering Sciences

Computational fluid dynamics, dynamics and rheology of complex fluids, active matter, hydrodynamic stability, turbulence, non-linear dynamics and chaos, heat and mass transfer, microfluidics, acoustofluidics, and mechanics of biological growth.

Life Sciences

Infectious and non-infectious diseases, bioinformatics, developmental biology, biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, microbiology, virology, immunology, genetics, RNA biology, circadian biology, evolutionary biology, neurobiology, and structural biology.

Geological Sciences

Earth sciences, mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, stratigraphy, structural geology, geophysics, remote sensing, environmental geology, hydrogeology, seismology, volcanology, palaeontology, and geomorphology.

Mathematical Sciences

Pure and applied mathematics, algebra, analysis, topology, number theory, differential equations, mathematical physics, probability and statistics, combinatorics, computational mathematics, mathematical modelling, and operations research.

Connecting Northeast India to Scientific Excellence

The North-East Summer Research Fellowship (NE-SRF) is a JNCASR initiative to encourage undergraduate and master's students from the seven sister states of Northeast India to actively engage in research in the natural sciences and engineering.

Selected fellows are placed under the guidance of faculty mentors from institutions in the Northeast for an intensive 8-week research experience in Physical, Chemical, Life, Mathematical, Geological or Engineering Sciences — either at the mentor's laboratory or in collaboration with JNCASR, Bengaluru.

Fellows receive a fellowship of ₹20,000 upon completion, ₹5,000 annual travel support, and up to ₹10,000 additional support for JNCASR collaboration. Up to 10 students are selected each year based on merit and statement of purpose.
